Colloquial / Alternate names:Mediterranean Shearwater Balearic Shearwater Yelkouan Shearwater Status in Europe:Rare Where and When: Habitat: Sea Notes: A fairly small shearwater previously treated as a sub species of Manx - distinguished by its browner plumage above and dingy smoky white below - has dark armpits and under tail coverts - slightly stockier than manx - feet project beyond the tail - Yelkouan is similar and can be seen together in some areas of the Mediterranean eg Corsica and Sardinia - subtly different flight to manx slower and more deliberate - Yelkouan has been claimed in Britain and is brownish black above white below with white undertail coverts - subtly different flight to Manx slower and more deliberate Balearic vs Yelkouan Shearwater,Breeds in the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean Sea - post breeding dispersal takes it north to Britain where it is seen increasingly regularly even into the North Sea, More Photos:
